Rules and regulations on the doctoral study at the University of Ljubljana

The doctoral study programme in Electrical Engineering allows the candidates to acquire the academic title of doktor / doktorica znanosti (female graduates take the latter title).

The doctoral study programme in Electrical Engineering has a duration of 4 years, is worth 240 credit points (ECTS) and is a 3rd cycle programme according to the Bologna scheme. Study components are evaluated by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which provides the basis for the international exchange of students in countries using the same or a comparable credit system.

The study programme in Electrical Engineering inseparably connects the studies with scientific research and development work. The programme primarily focuses on the independent creative research work of students, who are guided by their mentors.

The programme gives priority to choice over obligatory forms of studies. In order to adequately cover the increasingly ramified field of modern electrical engineering, the choice of study content is broad and diverse. The ability to choose gives students an opportunity to plan their research careers as early as possible and follow the needs of future employers. Furthermore, an appropriate breadth of education is ensured through obligatory seminars and the integration of elective generic content (transferable skills). The programme also allows for mobility within the organised forms of instruction and within individual research work.

During their studies, students are expected to actively participate in Slovenian and international scientific and specialist workshops and conferences, thus enabling them to develop the skills of scientific communication as well as critical assessment of the achievements of others and the results of their own research work. Among the key obligations of students is the proposal and preparation of the doctoral thesis. In their doctoral work, in addition to demonstrating a capacity for scientific thinking and an aptitude for research work, the candidates also demonstrate original contributions to science in at least one paper published in a scientific publication with an impact factor.


The basic objectives of the programme are:

  • to inseparably link the studies with scientific research and development work,
  • to develop a scientific approach and to master scientific thinking,
  • to encourage a comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering and its role in the broader scientific context,
  • to encourage students to follow and master state-of-the-art methods and technologies,
  • to develop communication skills, as well as an ability to report on scientific research achievements and transfer knowledge,
  • to develop objective and critical evaluation of achievements of others and of one’s own results,
  • to prepare doctoral graduates for creative scientific research and development work in the field of electrical engineering and in other fields.


General competences acquired through the programme:

  • individual creative scientific research and development work in the field of electrical engineering and in other fields,
  • following and accurately evaluating the latest achievements in the broader field of electrical engineering,
  • critical evaluation of the results of one’s own research and development work,
  • active professional written and oral communication,
  • teamwork with experts from various fields,
  • professional, environmental and social responsibility.


Subject-specific competences acquired through the programme:

  • upgrading of basic knowledge of electrical engineering,
  • independent creative scientific research and development work in the following fields:
    • electrical power engineering, photovoltaics,
    • electronics, microelectronics, optoelectronics, microsensorics, nanostructures,
    • mechatronics, embedded systems, intelligent systems, control systems, robotics,
    • metrology, quality assurance,
    • biomedical engineering and informatics,
    • ICT and multimedia technologies,
  • enhancing of knowledge with complementary areas and general skills, particularly communication skills in research and development and other areas based on the principle of elective choice and mobility.
